He holds a BSc in Physics, MSc. in Electromagnetic Fields and Microwave Engineering, and Ph.D in Microwave Engineering.

He started his research career since 1993 while working at China Research Institute of Radiowave Propagation (CRIRP), P.R. China. Afterwards, he worked at some institutes internationally, including: as a Post-Doc. Research Fellow at National University of Singapore, Singapore, Research Fellow at University of Birmingham, UK, Visiting Scientist at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ), Switzerland, Visiting Professor at University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB), USA, and Visiting Fellow at Antenna Research lab of Chiba University, Japan, etc.  He was also a Visiting Professor at Antennas and Microwave/Millimeter-wave Group, University of Calabria, Italy. In 2002, he was a Senior Lecturer and Head of Active Antenna Research Group at Northumbria University, Newcastle, UK, and promoted to Reader in 2006. He joined Surrey Space Center in 2007 as a Senior Lecturer.

He is a Technical Program Committee (TPC) member, Invited Speaker, Technical Session Chairman or Chair of Special Sessions of many international conferences in antenna and propagation, RF/microwave circuits, Electromagnetics, Satellite Communications and wireless communications. He is a member of IEEE, and serves as a technical reviewer for many internatioanl journals and international conferences. He is also a reviewer for books from various publishers, and a referee for evaluating research proposals of UK National Research Council (EPSRC), etc. He is a co-editor of the book <<Space Antenna Handbook>> (John Wiley & Sons, 2012). He has published over 150 technical papers, 8 book chapters and holds several patents in antennas and RF. He received many awards, including "URSI Young Scientist Award" from International Union of Radio Science (URSI), 2002, "Japan Society of Promotion Science Fellowship Award", Japan, 2005, etc. Currently he is a Principal Investigator (PI) at Surrey and also a member of Steering Committee for a large European Project "Millimeter-wave intelligent array antennas for next-generation mobile satellite communications" (FLEXWIN, funded by European Union FP7 ICT Program), collaborated with European Aerospace, Defense and Space Systems (EADS) Company, Germany, University of Calabria, Italy, University of Ulm, Germany, IHP Microelectronics, Germany, MIPOT, Italy and Ericcson, Sweden. He is also a PI for the project  "Design and Measurement of Low-cost Small Smart Antennas", funded by National Physical Laboratory, UK. In the area of satellite remote sensing, he is the PI at Surrey for a consortium project "Multi-Band GNSS Reflectometry Antennas/RF front ends for GNSS receivers and Satellite Remote Sensing", collaborated with Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL), University of Southampton, University of Bath, UK, etc.
